Staying Safe around Water this Summer

An article by GetSetGo Co-Founder, Claire Harrison

Whilst this week is set to see the hottest temperatures on record and we also look forward to a summer holiday full of fun at home, the beach or by the pool, it’s also a time to be mindful of how to keep your family safe by the water.

The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), continually works hard to raise awareness of the water safety code and aims to reduce the number of drowning and nonfatal drowning incidents that occur in the UK every year, by showing people how to be safe and have fun near water.

More than 700 people drown in the UK and Ireland every year, that’s one every 10 hours and many more suffer injury, sometimes life changing when they survive drowning.

And whilst these are super scary statistics, there are many things that you as a parent can do to ensure your family stays safe and enjoys the water.

Learn to Swim

Simple right? But did you know that over 40% of children leave school not being able to swim. We advise everyone to start lessons as early as possible. Being introduced to water as a baby can mean that some simple mechanics of swimming, breathing techniques and the ability to float and survive is already there and the fear that often accompanies a child’s first lessons at the age of 3 or 4 years old is bypassed.

Stay aware when on holiday

With the school holidays just around the corner and many of you looking forward to your summer holidays, weekends away and trips to the seaside, it’s sensible to turn our attention to keeping your family safe around water.

Often the excitement of these trips can mean that normal safety actions are not followed and the temptation to just jump in before weighing up the risks can often lead to accidents.

Here are some simple guidelines to staying safe when on holiday…

S – Spot Danger

A – Follow Advice

F – Stay close to Family members for Friends

E – shout for help and know the Emergency numbers for where you are

It’s Never too late to learn:

We cannot tell you how many times we get told by parents that they can’t swim themselves. Or that they are fearful of passing on their fear of water to their little ones. And whilst it’s inspiring that they are ensuring their children will not be in that position, we say, come and learn to swim too. Then you too, can stay safe and enjoy the water with your children! One of our biggest satisfactions is teaching a nervous adult to swim and to overcome one of their biggest life challenges!

Stay safe, be aware and definitely invest in learning to swim, but whatever you do and wherever you are…enjoy the water too!

If you have time, head to the RLSS page on Water Safety for more top tips!

GetSetGo Family Club offers swimming lessons 7 days a week alongside a whole timetable of other clubs and classes (including First Aid for parents) from their Flagship location in Putney, London.

Why Mental Health Is Important! (for everyone)

For years people have been going to doctors to fix their physical health, forgetting that our mental health is just as important! Why? Well, it affects our lives in more ways than one and sometimes in unexpected ways. Mental ill health can come in many different guises from behavioural changes, emotional changes or even personality changes and it’s not just something that affects grown ups. One in ten children have a diagnosable mental health condition – that’s roughly three children in every classroom. It can be tough growing up.

Many thousands of young people go through periods of mental ill health and this is completely normal. For some, these will resolve with time, while others will need professional support. It can be difficult to know if there is something upsetting a child or young person, but there are ways to spot when something’s wrong. Look out for:

Everyone feels low, angry or anxious at times. But when these changes last for a long time or are significantly affecting them, it might be time to consider getting professional help. There are a whole array of incredible resources out there. Here are just a few:

www.rethink.org

https://www.youngminds.org.uk/

https://www.barnardos.org.uk/what-we-do/helping-families/mental-health

It’s important to make sure you look after your own mental well-being too, as this will not only help you support yourself but also those you care about.

Parenting or caring for a child or young person can be tough. Try to recognise and acknowledge when you’re feeling low or overwhelmed. Struggling with something or experiencing your own mental health problems does not make you a bad parent or carer.

At GetSetGo! we are passionate about both physical and mental wellbeing. Research shows that physical activity has a huge potential to enhance our wellbeing. Even a short burst of 10 minutes’ brisk walking increases our mental alertness, energy and positive mood. Participation in regular physical activity can increase our self-esteem and can reduce stress and anxiety. It also plays a role in preventing the development of mental health problems and in improving the quality of life of people experiencing mental health problems.

At GetSetGo! we have something for everyone from so why not come and join us and explore the classes we offer, where you can take time for you, time for them and time together!

What a year it’s been!

The excitement of opening on 12th of April 2021 was simply incredible – but even before that monumental day the excitement had started to build.

Training our staff & watching our team come together towards the end of 2020 was such a fantastic experience and by the time launch day came around there was such an incredible buzz around the club.

After almost 8 months of delay we were finally able to open our doors and see our vision come to life!

Starting a business can be challenging at the best of times, let alone during a global pandemic. It has been a roller coaster of emotions but one we couldn’t have done without each other and our amazing team. We’re so grateful to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone.

Together, resilience has become our superpower.

international womens day

In the lead-up to our launch, we managed to secure crucial funding literally the Friday night before lockdown. And this was followed up by us securing the lease of the Putney site just a week later. Talk about timing!

Roll the clock forward to today, and we’re just delighted to say we have delivered more than 20,000 studio sessions (with more than 30 different class types) in addition to an almost unbelievable 40,000 swimming classes in that time.

That’s a lot of hard work and dedication, not just from our team but also from all of our incredible parents and little ones who should be proud of the progress they’ve made with us!

And it doesn’t end there.

We have exciting plans to expand and continue the GetSetGo! journey by opening 6 further sites across London in the very near future. We have just signed heads of terms on site 2 and 3 and will begin the fundraising process imminently.

None of this would have been possible without the help of our staff and of course from you. The support we have received from each and every one has been utterly heartwarming and there really are no words to thank you all enough. We can only continue to grow with you behind us.

So we hope you enjoy sharing in the birthday celebrations with us on Tuesday 12th April, and raise a glass to the year that’s just been….and to the future!

With love,

Claire & Alina

We are incredibly proud not only to be a female-founded company, but also one that employs a large number of amazing women across every department within GetSetGo!

This International Women’s Day we wanted to acknowledge and celebrate some of these wonderful women by shining the spotlight on them and telling you a little more about them and what makes them such an important part of our club.

Claire, Co-Founder

our CEO

Claire originally hails from Manchester and has worked in the swim industry for more than 20 years. Prior to launching GetSetGo! she built Swimming Rocks into a successful, multi-site swim school here in London.

She has two little ones herself – Sam & Eva – and one of the reasons she was so passionate about launching GetSetGo! was a result of her experience of taking them to expensive children’s classes and ending up sat on dirty church, village halls and pub floors. Thankfully, our club has helped put an end to all that!

DID YOU KNOW? Claire is an RFU qualified U7s rugby coach and also holds a world record having taken part in the world’s biggest tap dance!

Alina, Co-Founder

our

Alina is a mum of two with a passion for sports and exercise, not to mention a huge amount of experience at management and board level across the leisure industry.

You might think launching a business during a pandemic might be a sufficient challenge for most people, but Alina still found the time to have her second child just as GetSetGo! was preparing to launch at the end of 2020 and baby Halle (along with big brother Hugo) has been a regular visitor to the club ever since.

DID YOU KNOW? Alina has competed for Wales in both hockey AND triple jump! She also carried the Rugby World Cup trophy and ran a leg of the trophy’s tour around Wales in 1999 ahead of the tournament.

Emma, Duty Sales Manager

Alice in Wonderland

Emma has been with us since before we first opened the club and has worked tirelessly across our various departments.

Starting out as a barista in our café, you’ll now find either find her on our Reception desk or maybe even running a birthday party. You may also recognise her from her star turn as Alice in Wonderland during our recent World Book Day celebrations.

DID YOU KNOW? Emma is a crafty queen! There’s very little she can’t do with a piece of paper and some scissors….and if you are lucky, you might even hear her belt out a few tunes as she

Huda, Experience Hero

Experience Hero

Huda has brought a wealth of experience to the club, firstly as one of our Receptionists and now as our brilliant Experience Hero! Her personable, efficient and ever-cheery demeanour makes her a key member of the team.

Any questions about the club? She’s always at the end of the phone to answer any queries or questions and her natural flare makes every tour and show around exciting!

DID YOU KNOW? Huda is an avid gym goer so keep an eye out for her in one of our Ignite or Power classes!

Michaela, Head of Parties

Another member of the team who’s been with us since Day One, firstly as a member of our Reception team and quickly moving into our Experience team and more recently has been appointed our absolutely outstanding Head of Parties!

DID YOU KNOW? When she’s not busy jazzing up your little one’s birthday party, Michaela is also an actress & writer who recently performed her own piece of work at a theatre in London.

Odna, Head of Food & Beverage

Odna has been a breath of fresh air since she took over the running of our café last year. One of two Mongolians here at GetSetGo! Putney, Odna’s friendly yet no-nonsense approach has made her an incredibly popular member of the team and she has a fantastic sense of humour.

DID YOU KNOW? Odna has her very own range of bath bombs and candles that she makes at home.

As children develop and grow their interests and needs are constantly evolving and they go through various different stages of play development.

We asked our friends at Toy Box Club why age-appropriate play is so important.

Why does going to a great music class with your toddler feel so good?

Because you know that the teacher understands what your child will be able to appreciate mentally and what they’ll be able to do physically.

Children develop and change so quickly, it’s important to give them a regular challenge. And loads of fun, obviously!

At Toy Box Club we know that having the right toys at each stage of your child’s development is crucial. Every one of our boxes is curated by us to work for each month of your child’s life from birth to 5 years old.

And here’s 5 reasons why:

1. Children just won’t enjoy playing with toys that are for younger or older children as much. It sounds obvious but most toy manufacturers have a good understanding of what your child will find fun.

2. Playing with the right toys plays a crucial role in children’s physical and mental development. Younger children need to work their gross motor skills, and slowly start moving towards the finer motor skills as they get closer to school age.

3. Those age guidelines are there for your child’s safety and your peace of mind. Children under 3 (for example) are much more likely to mistake a small part for a sweet and stick it in their mouth.

4. We’ve found that toddlers need more structure to their play, often optimised with an adult present. Toys that stack, for example, and building blocks. Older children can respond well to more improvisational, creative play. This is why we have lots of dressing up, imaginary and pretend play options in our older boxes.

5. The right toys at the right time are crucial in helping pre-school children understand the world around them and help them develop problem solving skills. They also teach them about sharing, conflict resolution and those essential social and interactional skills.

National Baby Swimming Week was started in 2016 to help raise awareness about the benefits of getting children into a pool as early as possible and get them swimming. Baby swimming doesn’t just teach little one’s key water safety skills but can boost their confidence in various ways, in and out of the water.

Here, our new Head of Swim, Dan Wright, outlines FIVE key reasons why it’s so important to get your Tots swimming as early as possible:

1. Water confidence

Getting comfortable in the water early helps break down the barriers to further swimming lessons and helps build greater confidence and skills in the water for the future.

2. Bonding And Social Skills

Babies will enjoy social interaction with parents, instructors and other children during their swim lessons. Parent participation gives you an opportunity to bond with your child one-on-one. Taking advantage of family swim times can also give you quality time with your baby.

3. Helping your baby to develop cognitively

The Griffith study, conducted over a four-year period with nearly 7,000 children, found that children who had taken baby swimming lessons were more cognitively developed than children their age who had not.

4. Early baby sensory development

Babies who are exposed to stimulation early get a brain boost. The baby’s brain is more malleable in the earlier months of life, starting swimming at a young age will help develop the sensory & motor skills.

5. Improves sleeping patterns & appetite

All of that physical exertion in the water, as well as the energy it takes their little bodies to stay warm, burns a lot of calories. You’ll probably notice an increase in your baby’s appetite & sleep after regular swimming time.

Being physically active, whatever your age, can help you lead a healthier and happier life, giving both immediate and long-term health benefits.

Whilst we may all be aware of the benefits, sometimes starting a new fitness journey can be daunting and far too often people don’t stick at it.

We wanted to share our top 5 fitness mistakes to avoid and help you kickstart the new school year and achieve your fitness goals:

1. Not having a realistic goal

Perhaps your goal is to run a marathon, get back to fitness after pregnancy and childbirth or trading in your ‘dad bod’ for something more akin to Gerard Butler in 300.

Whatever the goal, be realistic about when you’re going to achieve it. Focus on small, achievable wins and the results will come.

2. Not changing your diet

The most common mistake for people who simply aren’t seeing results, is that they throw themselves into exercise without changing their diet.

The key is to focus on the 80% nutrition, 20% exercise rule. Creating a caloric deficit through diet and speeding up your metabolism through exercise, can help you be successful on your weight loss journey.

3. Ignoring rest days

Training everyday might feel productive but if you’re not giving your body a break it won’t have the time it needs to rebuild its muscles, nerves, bones, and connective tissue.

Rest days, despite the misleading nature of the name, are encouraged to be active. Whilst you’re not doing intense training you are still moving and stretching, doing a class like yoga helps to facilitate rest whilst keeping you active.

4. Training like you did when you were 20 (or pre-children)

It is never too late to start exercising. In fact, exercising later in life might just be better for you.

That being said, it is important to listen to your body and start slowly. Older and younger people can achieve the same things but older people have got to work harder to do it!

5. Sticking to the same workout

A common mistake made by both beginners and those with experience is not having enough variety in their exercise regime.

Variety is key, not only to keep you motivated but also from a physiological standpoint. Training should include all key elements such as cardiovascular endurance, strength training, mobility and flexibility.

Whether you’re new to the class or a seasoned athlete, now is a good time to take pause and think about your fitness. Whilst the New Year offers the opportunity for a clean slate, starting your fitness goals isn’t exclusive to January and can be achieved at any time!

As we approach the nationwide easing of restrictions from Monday 19th July, we wanted to reassure you that your safety remains our top priority and we’ll continue to do everything we can to make you feel comfortable whenever you visit our club.

As outlined below we will be making a few small adjustments to our operations, while some measures will remain in place for your continued safety.

What’s changing?

We will be increasing our class capacities in the studio. These increases will be dependent on age group and class type. All changes will be reflected on the class timetable from Monday.
