Get Summer Ready – Help Your Child Stay Safe in the Water

Let’s be honest: for many parents, swimming can almost feel optional… until summer arrives. Suddenly, holidays, paddling pools, and days at the beach make water safety a real concern. And parents start wondering if their child will feel confident, comfortable, and able to enjoy it all.

At GetSetSwim, we know that summer should feel calmer, for children and parents. It’s not about perfect strokes. It’s about your child feeling secure in the water, enjoying time with friends, and knowing what to do if something unexpected happens.
Why water confidence matters before Summer

“Summer ready” doesn’t mean flawless technique. For most families, it means your child can:

  • Stay calm if they slip or fall into deeper water
  • Put their face in the water without fear
  • Swim to a wall or edge and climb out safely
  • Join in pool games and make friends confidently

These are the kinds of skills that make holidays, paddling pools, and family days by the water far less stressful for parents.

GetSetGo Children's Swimming Lessons in Putney
Water safety is key

Swimming well and staying safe go hand in hand.

Our lessons include water safety education three times a year, teaching children practical skills and awareness they can carry beyond the pool.

We also follow principles from the Water Safety Code:
• Stop and think: Always choose safe, supervised places to swim.
• Stay together: Children should swim with an adult or buddy.
• Float: If something unexpected happens, stay calm, float, and get to safety.
• Call 999: In an emergency, alert lifeguards or call for help.

Helping children understand why safety matters — not just how — builds confidence and independence.

Simple things parents can do at home

Even outside swimming lessons, small steps make a difference:

  • Let children feel water on hands, feet, and cheeks

  • Blow bubbles together or play gentle splash games

  • Practise climbing out safely in the bath or pool

  • Talk through safety rules in a playful, reassuring way

These little habits help children feel comfortable in water and make children’s swimming lessons even more effective.

How our London swimming lessons support families

At GetSetSwim, children learn in small groups (1:1, 2:1, or 4:1) so they get attention when they need it. Our teachers stay in the water, using play and gentle encouragement rather than pressure. Warm, purpose-built pools and spaces designed for families make lessons calm, safe, and enjoyable for children and parents alike.

Start in March to fully enjoy your Summer

Confidence and safety don’t appear overnight. Beginning lessons now gives your child weeks of practice before holidays, so summer can feel calmer, safer, and more fun.

We offer a range of swimming lessons for children at our London clubs in Putney, Golders Green, Fulham, and South Kensington – as we only offer small classes, just remember spaces book up early!
