Crash Course or Weekly Swimming Lessons: Understanding your Child’s Swimming Journey

Finding the right swimming lessons for your child can be confusing. Parents and caregivers sometimes ask us whether an intensive swimming Crash Course or regular weekly lessons would be better for their child.

At GetSetSwim, we don't believe there's a single "right" way to learn to swim. Every child is different, every family has different routines, and confidence grows in different ways.
That's why we offer both weekly lessons and intensive holiday crash courses - not because they compete with one another, but because they complement each other beautifully.

Whether your child is taking their very first splash, building confidence in the water or refining their front crawl, both lesson formats have an important role to play.

One swimming journey, different ways to learn

At the heart of every lesson at GetSetSwim is our carefully designed 7-stage swimming programme.

Rather than rushing children from one badge to the next, we’ve created a structured pathway that develops confidence, water safety and swimming skills step by step.

Whether your child attends weekly lessons, joins a holiday crash course, or enjoys a combination of both, they’ll be working towards the same milestones with the support of our experienced coaches.

The difference isn’t what they’re learning. It’s how that learning fits your child.

Weekly lessons: Building confidence over time

For many children, weekly lessons become part of the rhythm of family life. Children return each week to familiar faces, trusted coaches and a consistent routine that helps confidence grow naturally over time.

Weekly lessons are ideal for:

  • building long-term confidence in the water
  • developing strong swimming technique
  • creating positive routines
  • progressing steadily through our 7-stage programme
  • giving children time to absorb and practise new skills

Learning to swim isn’t about rushing. It’s about creating swimmers who feel safe, capable and genuinely enjoy being in the water. That’s exactly what weekly lessons are designed to support.

Crash Courses: Building momentum

Sometimes, a different rhythm can be just as powerful.

Our holiday crash courses give children the opportunity to swim over five consecutive days, creating momentum that simply isn’t possible with a week between lessons.

For beginners, this can be a wonderful way to start their swimming journey. Instead of waiting several days between lessons, children quickly become familiar with:

  • their coach
  • the pool environment
  • lesson routines
  • water confidence
  • learning through play

That familiarity often helps children settle more quickly and feel at ease in the water.

Parents are sometimes surprised by how much confidence can grow simply because everything still feels fresh from the day before.

But crash courses aren’t only useful for children who are just starting to swim. Children at every stage of our programme can benefit from intensive lessons. As they become more confident swimmers, a crash course offers valuable opportunities to:

  • consolidate recently learned skills
  • strengthen stroke technique
  • improve breathing and coordination
  • refine more advanced skills
  • increase stamina and endurance
  • build confidence before progressing to the next stage

Swimming is like any skill: the more opportunities children have to practise well, the more natural those movements become. That’s why many of our families use school holidays to give their child an extra boost.

How the two lesson types work together

At GetSetSwim many families combine both approaches. Some children begin with a crash course before moving into weekly lessons.

Others attend weekly lessons throughout the year and join us for holiday intensives to reinforce what they’ve been learning.

Some of our experienced swimmers use a crash course to help them master a tricky stroke, or to build momentum and return to school or swim teams feeling even more confident.

Rather than choosing one or the other, parents find a combination of both lessons can really support their child’s swimming progress.

So, what's best for a child who is a little nervous?

This is where parents often wonder whether an intensive course might be too much. The answer depends on the child.

For some nervous swimmers, having the same teacher and returning to the pool several times in a short period can actually help build confidence. The pool quickly becomes a familiar place rather than a new experience each week.

For others, a slower introduction through weekly lessons may feel more comfortable.

At GetSetSwim, we don’t believe in a one-size-fits-all approach. We get to know the child in front of us. Some children need a little more time. Some surprise us with how quickly they become comfortable once they find their rhythm.

When we consider lesson formats, we ask:

  • How comfortable is your child in the water?
  • Have they had lessons before?
  • Are they excited, unsure or nervous?
  • What are you hoping to achieve?
  • What fits best with your family’s routine?

The right choice isn’t just about the number of lessons – it’s about creating the right environment for your child to learn.

Does a Crash Course mean my child will learn faster?

Progress looks different for every child.

A crash course can help children make noticeable progress because they have more frequent opportunities to practise and build confidence. However, learning to swim is still a journey.

Children develop at different speeds, and progress isn’t always measured by a new skill every lesson. Sometimes the biggest step forward is a child who was nervous getting into the pool happily. Sometimes it is a child who finally feels confident putting their face in the water.

Whether those moments happen during a weekly lesson or over the course of an intensive holiday programme, they’re all part of the same journey.

Building a love of swimming - and the skills that last a lifetime

For more than 25 years, we’ve believed that children learn best when they feel supported, encouraged and genuinely enjoy coming to swimming.

That’s why swimming lessons at GetSetSwim are built around expert coaching, small groups, warm pools and a carefully structured programme that allows every child to progress at their own pace.

Whether your family chooses weekly lessons, a crash course or a combination of both, our goal never changes: to help children become confident, capable swimmers who love being in the water – and to support parents and caregivers every step of the way.

Questions parents often ask:

Should my child start with a Crash Course or weekly lessons?

Both are excellent ways to begin learning to swim. Some children enjoy the familiarity that comes from swimming several days in a row, while others thrive with a weekly routine. If you’re unsure, we’re always happy to help you decide what would suit your child best. Call us on 020 8050 0070.

Crash courses are a fantastic way to build momentum and confidence, but many families find they work best alongside weekly lessons as part of a child’s ongoing swimming journey.

Not at all. Children at every stage of our 7-stage programme can benefit from intensive lessons, whether they’re building confidence, consolidating skills or refining technique

Children often make noticeable progress because they’re practising regularly over consecutive days. However, every child develops differently, and lasting confidence and technique are built over time

Absolutely. Many GetSetSwim families combine weekly lessons with holiday crash courses, giving children the best of both worlds: consistent long-term development and concentrated bursts of practice when they’re ready.
